Zach Scott block captains Woody Lauland, Anita Roberts, Katie Lauland, and Teddy Tierney
Zach Scott was often cast as a suave villain or fickle ladies’ man. His most famous role was that of Joan Crawford’s love interest in the 1945 film Mildred Pierce. In real life, he was known for his charitable work on behalf of veterans and the poor.
Each year the entire Mueller Community is invited to celebrate Zach’s birthday at a potluck event hosted by the Zach Scott block captains from west of Berkman: Anita Roberts, Teddy Tierney, Katie Lauland, and me.
Because Zach’s actual birthday rarely falls on a weekend, the date of the celebration varies from year to year. This year it was held on Sunday, March 4th, in the alley behind Teddy’s house. As usual, the block captains provided ice cream and cake, which are always popular with the neighborhood children.
Katie lit the candles at 5 PM, and members of the Mueller Community Singers led everyone in singing “Happy Birthday.” The Community Singers also performed a version of “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music, including a Mueller-specific verse written especially for the occasion:
Parties in alleys and drawing chalk smileys
Concerts in Lake Park with movies in Spring

Mueller Community Singers Carol Parks, Kim Updegrove, Joann Zimmerman, Janelle Dozier, Julie Berman, and Alison Raffalovich
These are a few of my favorite things.
“Dogs on their leashes and cats on their porches
Tots in their strollers and tacos at Torchy’s
Dads in the park pushing kids on the swings
These are a few of my favorite things.
“Flowers on the Prairie near Pollen and Spore
Hikers and bikers and trikers galore
Owls in the Tower are preening their wings
These are a few of my favorite things.
“When the dogs roam
When the pool’s closed
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad!”
